The BMST50 Blade Sharpener and Setter, or Sharp’n’Set device, is a two-in-one machine designed for performing blade maintenance operations. It is a perfect solution for low-volume sawmillers as it allows them to maintain their blades independently and inexpensively. There is no need to purchase two separate machines for sharpening and setting the blades if the space around the workshop is limited.

The Wood-Mizer BMST50 Blade Sharpener and Setter is a manually operated and simple-to-use device that will reduce the time and costs of preparing sawmill blades. The user uses the machine with two levers – one for moving the sawmill blade forward and the other for grinding or setting the teeth. Switching the device configuration between sharpening and setting is quick and simple. The BMST50 is compatible with most 32-mm wide sawmill blade profiles that Wood-Mizer offers.

The BMST50 is fitted with blade support brackets which secure the blade during sharpening. The operator can also adjust the pressure applied onto the blade as well as the distance of the wheel from the blade. In addition, there are easy-adjustable knobs to index the teeth for fine-tuning sharpening, an adjustable positioning knob for various blade widths, and adjustable set points for easier tooth-setting. The BMST50 Sharpener and Setter is delivered with a tooth setter gauge for observing a consistent and accurate setting.
The Sharp’n’Set device requires a stable and flat surface for installation, for example, a table, stand, or worktop. It can be placed in almost every workshop corner with compact dimensions of 50 cm x 50 cm. A 12V DC electric motor is used to power the combo machine with an optional upgrade to a 230V AC power supply.

The best choice for grinding is a CBN wheel which has been developed for quick and efficient sharpening of sawmill blades. CBN wheels use a super abrasive material for grinding, which prevents the blades from dulling too quickly and prevents overheating. The BMST50 Sharpener and Setter device uses a 127-mm wide (5-inch) CBN wheel that requires grinding oil. To make the sawmill blade sharpening as effective as possible, CBN grinding wheels are available in several default profiles that require the user to carefully match the CBN profile with the shape of the sawmill blade teeth.

The teeth need to be appropriately sharpened and set for the best performance. With every next sharpening, the tooth setting is decreased and requires readjustment. When setting the teeth, following the “left-right-straight” pattern is essential to ensure that the left and right teeth are used for opening the material and the straight one for removing sawdust from timber. It is a common practice to apply narrow tooth sets for hardwoods and a wider tooth set for softwoods.

The BMT300 pneumatic setter ensures extreme tooth setting accuracy and consistency. An electronic control panel displays all parameters and diagnostic tools. Simply install the blade, and start the setter in the mode you wish to run. When one side of the blade is finished, invert the blade, re-install it in the setter, and move the blade pusher into the reverse position.

Several different modes and functions allow flexibility with how the setter will operate and the parameters that it will use. Inspection Mode simply checks the set on the teeth. Regular setting modes can detect set patterns, and bend back overset teeth automatically. After setting the blade, the setter will stop, or will double-check the blade to ensure that the set is exact. Tolerances for minimum and maximum set can be adjusted.

The BMT300 is designed as the toothsetting companion for the BMS500 blade sharpener for companies with multiple band sawmills in operation as well as for ReSharp service centres whose business is based on blade maintenance.
